Gluten-free woes in Soya-sauce City!

Hi there -

Sorry for the long gap between posts...since I have gone gluten free, eating out has become a less enjoyable and far more experimental occurrence.

So, gluten free in Singapore. "Say, what?" (or in local speak "come again?")
"I can't eat wheat (bread, cakes, pies, buns, pastries, white sauce, sausages...anything cooked in soya sauce (Chinese food); beer, barley water..."
"No bread, meh? Oh. Huh. Noodles can or cannot?"

Yeeeeaaaahhh...So mostly I cook at home now. Cold Storage is starting to stock a good range of gluten free products, vietnamese food is usually pretty safe, South Indian food, Japanese (sans soya sauce)...could kill for flourless chocolate cake...but for now, a quick review of one restaurant where a gluten intolerant foodie can be a chooser, not a beggar:

Margaritas, Dempsey Hill.

My friend and I chose a "quiet" Saturday night for our mega plate up of Mexican food and margaritas at (aptly named) "Magaritas" restaurant, on Dempsey Hill. A good spot for tourists visiting Singapore looking for a mix of tropical cocktails and alfresco dining, Dempsy Hill is a re-gentrified cluster of army barracks in a semi-forested enclave.

Starting with a Mexican version of cheese fondue, we eagerly dipped corn chips into a gooey pot of melted cheese, spiced with roasted chili peppers (chorizo served on the side for my friend). Although very yummy at the time, it did evoke cheese sweats later!

For the main event - more cheese - I had chicken in a white-corn wrap with rice, and my friend had a dish known colloquially as "the Kitchen Sink", which came with a "humongous"-size warning from the waiter. Essentially, the dish is a protein and carbs meaty wonder that only a weight lifter (after clearing the weigh-in that morning) could finish in one sitting. (nope, she couldn't manage it all).

Which meant - no room for a dessert!

Super-full after all the eating, we took the brave route of walking home from Dempsey Hill into town (with heels!).
